There are three common feline worms that affects cats. Tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms are three different types. These worms multiply as they live inside your cat. If there get to be too many, it can be life-threatening for your cat. Keep reading to learn all about these worms that affect cats.

Hookworms

Hookworms only measure half an inch. Cats normally ingest them along with their food. Your cat can also become infected if the worm penetrates his skin. Hookworms pass through the lungs on their way to the intestines.

An infestation of hookworms can also be life-threatening. Since these worms suck blood, your cat will experience blood loss. If they get to be too numerous, your cat can develop anemia. Deworming medication is used to treat hookworms.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms rarely cause serious damage to your cat. Ingesting contaminated fleas or rodents is the main way cats become infected. Like hookworms, they dwell in the small intestine. Your cat’s stool may also have segments in it. You can easily spot the segments by looking at your cat’s feces closely. Deworming medication is also used to treat an infestation of these worms. However, it’s important that you do your best to control fleas around your cat if you want to prevent a recurrence of tapeworms in felines.

Roundworms

Roundworms live in the same intestine and can reach up to five inches in length. Contact with contaminated food or feces is the most common method of transmission. Queens can also pass them to their kittens through their milk.

Since they’re so large, too many worms can easily cause an intestinal obstruction. Kittens can easily die from this condition. Your veterinarian can determine if your cat has these feline worms by examining his stool. An infestation is easily treated through use of a deworming medication.

Teach Your Cat to Use the Toilet!

Toilet training your cat isn’t that hard, as long as you’re patient and diligent in following all the instructions. Really, it’s quite easy. It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Going through each of the phases slowly is important if you want to make sure your cat will take to the new arrangements.

You should give some serious thought to attempting cat toilet training. Teaching your cat to use the toilet will not only save money on cat litter, your house will smell better without a litter box, and you’ll be helping the environment. The following are a few simple steps for those who would like to give this a try.

To start with, you need to begin slowly moving the litter box towards its new location so your cat doesn’t find it too much of a change. Thus, you want to shift the litter box in increments. This may take you a fair bit of time, but it’s essential for your cat to figure out that the bathroom is where it now has to go to relieve itself. You can move the box an inch at a time or you can do it in smaller or bigger increments, whatever works best for your cat.

Now that the box is positioned alongside the toilet, the next move is to increase the height. Slowly build up the base so that the litter box is eventually the same height as the toilet. Make certain when you do this that you also securely fasten the box to the base because your kitty will now have to jump in order to do its business, and you don’t want to have to clean up any accidents. Heavy blocks or phonebooks work well for this purpose. After the base is at the same height as the toilet and the cat is accustomed to utilizing the box at this height, you want to shift it nearer and nearer to the toilet, and then gradually slide it over until it’s on top of the toilet. Meanwhile, you need to put less and less litter in the box, so eventually there’s only an inch or so covering the bottom.

You’re now ready to move to the last step of this operation. Remove the litter box and replace it with an aluminum tray that is securely attached to the toilet. Next you’ll want to remove the litter from the tray and cut a hole in it. Slowly start to enlarge the hole, until eventually your cat is only using the toilet!

Caring For Your Cat During Summer

During hot summer months, it can get pretty hot. Learning how to take care of a cat during this season is important. As a cat owner it is important for you to take extra precautions for your cat’s health during hot weather, otherwise, your cat may suffer from dehydration.  Since your cat can’t tell you when it is feeling dehydrated, it is up to you to pay attention to your cat’s behavior and provide cooler living conditions if necessary to prevent overheating.

Pet cats don’t have the same street smarts as stray cats.  They may not be able to find a cool place outdoors.  If they do find one your cat will probably not come home until after the sun goes down.  It’s a good idea, then, to keep your cat inside during hot weather.  Concrete, which may be a cool place for your cat to lay when the weather is not hot, gets too hot for a cat’s tender paws during the hottest seasons.

If your cat travels in your car with you, never leave your cat in a parked car in the heat.  The temperature in a closed car rises extremely rapidly in the heat.  It can be harmful or even deadly to your cat.

Even when you try to park in the shade to prevent your car from heating up, as the sun moves throughout the day.  The heat travels from hot areas to cold areas.  Dogs can sometimes alert passers-by that they are in discomfort, but a cat is unable to do that and may die in as little as fifteen minutes.  Always get your cat out of the car with you when you park.

Keeping your cat’s fur short will help it keep cool.  It will also help to comb out the fur to remove shed fur that is trapped beneath the top layer.  Cat owners who have cats with natural long hair may have no choice but to provide their cat with a cooler environment.

Make sure your cat always has access to a bowl of clean water, regardless of the season.  You must always help guard against dehydration.   Change the water often during the summer to keep it cool.  The important thing is to help your cat maintain a healthy body temperature. Keep some of these tips when you are also choosing a pet for kids.

One of the downsides to keeping a cat in your home has to put up with the foul odor from cat litter that will not leave on its own unless you take some help from companies that provide solutions to dealing with getting rid of the interminable odor given off by cat litter. If you thought that it is just the odor that is a problem; think again, because you also have to remove the litter by picking it up and disposing it off somewhere where the smells will not bother you. Fortunately, your work has been made easier thanks to the introduction of a product known as Flushable Cat litter.

Thank Your Lucky Stars

This products is so ready to hand that cat lovers are thanking their encouraging stars that companies have addressed the mate concerns of acquiring rid of both the litter as too the smell that comes from it. Flushable Cat Litter helps you to take out the litter from the litter box reserved for your cat and then simply flush down the fecal matter down your toilet bowl.

The main advantage to using Flushable Cat litter is that it works out to be better than using clumping clay that costs thrice the amount that this excellent products costs. Furthermore, Flushable Cat litter is finer as compared with clumping clay and you also don’t need to use too much of it to get the desired results. Even if you are not able to buy Flushable Cat litter at your neighborhood pet store you can always go online and find an online store that has some of it in stock.

There is not much difference in terms of impact on the environment though whenever you use clumping clay you would have to take the mess with you to the closest landfill and dump it there. On the other hand, were you to use Flushable Cat litter then all that you need to do is flush it down the toilet and create a little extra sewage and use up a little bit extra quantity of water.

Another good option available to cat owners is to compost the litter after the stool has been dried and removed. And, you also need to ensure, if you are going to use Flushable Cat litter, that your cat is not averse to its presence in their litter box. Some cats might not like to see the Flushable variety in their litter boxes and so will start to defecate elsewhere and so compound the problem. This means that you need to keep a close eye on how your cat reacts to the presence of the Flushable litter in her box.

The best course of action of course is to gradually and slowly introduce your cat to its Flushable Cat litter. You could begin by merge just a small come of the Flushable litter into the cat’s litter box and if all goes well at first you can then start to get ahead the amounts a bit at a time till you are able to entirely fill the litter box with the flushable miscellanea.

It pays to be deliberate in how you proceed with victimisation this alternative which means that it will not be a good alternate to try and flush the entire mixture of cat litter and the flushable bedding material like a shot after the cat has eliminated. It is instead far better to wait till your cat is completely at home with the presence of Flushable litter before attempting to flush the mess away.

Of course, you need to be prepared for the eventuality that your cat refuses to use the Flushable variety and in that case you will have little option than to use clumping clay and that in turn means repeated forays to the public dumping grounds.

How To Give Your Cat A Pill

Giving your pet cat a pill can be a nightmare. No cat wants something shoved down his throat, and he will fight you tooth and nail to prevent it. Although most cats are small in size, you’d be quite amazed with how much power they actually have. There are ways that you can get your cat to take his pills, which we will cover below.

The easiest way to give a cat pill is to crush the power into a powdery form by putting it between two spoons. Once the pill is powder, mix it in with some wet cat food. Cats that are used to eating dry cat food will see the wet food and think of it as a treat. They will normally eat it up, unaware that they just took their medicine.

If the medicine happens to be in capsule form, all you have to do is pry the capsule apart then sprinkle the medicine on some wet food and serve it to your pet. If the food also contains the pill or if your cat is sick, chances are he won’t eat it. In this event, you should look into a pet piller. You can get these handy devices from your veterinarian. They are plastic rods that hold the pill until you press a plunger. When you get one, you should always get a long one with a softer tip.

When you get your gun, your vet should show you how to use it. The most difficult aspect of using the gun is getting your cat to open his mouth. The gun will more or less shoot the pill in the cat’s mouth, and down his throat. You’ll need to hold him tight, to make sure that he doesn’t wiggle his way loose. Once you have his mouth open, you’ll need to squeeze the trigger and pull the gun away quickly. After the pill has been inserted, make sure you give your cat a treat.

If you aren’t comfortable using the gun, you can always try giving your cat his pills by hand. To do it this way, you’ll need to hold your cat still, and open his mouth with your hand. Once you have his mouth open, you should aim for the back of his throat and throw the pill in. Once it is in his mouth, you should close his mouth with your hand and hold it shut for a few moments. This way, your cat will swallow the pill if he hasn’t already.

If you can’t get any of the above techniques to work, you can always go to a local pharmacy and get them to a make flavored gel or liquid using your cats medication. You should use this as a last resort though, as it can tend to get expensive.

When one of your cat’s thyroid glands becomes overactive, he develops a condition known as hyperthyroidism. Middle-aged to older cats are commonly affected by this endocrine disease. If your cat isn’t treated in time, it can lead to heart failure and death. This article will discuss cat hyperthyroidism.

Causes

The most common cause of this condition is development of adenomas in the thyroid gland. Adenomas are groups of non-cancerous cells. This condition can also be caused by cancerous cells growing in the thyroid gland. However, this is a very rare situation. If your cat is suffering from this disease, he will exhibit few common symptoms.

Symptoms

The thyroid gland is responsible for controlling the rate of metabolism. Your cat will drink and eat more than normal if the gland is malfunctioning. However, he will also begin to lose weight very fast. Your cat may also become more active than usual.

Hyperthyroidism in cats can also affect the gastrointestinal system. Diarrhea and vomiting are common signs. Problems with the heart are also common. They include increased heart rate, arrhythmias, and congestive heart failure.

Diagnosis

This condition can only be diagnosed accurately using a blood sample. A test will measure the level of thyroid hormone in the blood. The vet may have a hard time diagnosing this disease since the level of thyroid hormone can vary over time. The vet may also palpate the thyroid gland to see if its enlarged.

Treatment

There are three treatment options for hyperthyroidism. Your cat can have drugs, radioactive iodine, or surgery. All thyroid tissue in the body is destroyed by radioactive iodine. Radioactive iodine is the most effective treatment method, although it’s the most costly.

Surgery involves removing one or both of the thyroid glands. Since there may still be thyroid tissue in other areas of the body, surgery may not treat the condition effectively. Your cat may also be prescribed anti-thyroid medication that needs to be taken for life. If your cat stops taking these drugs, the symptoms will reappear quickly.

Treatment

Cat Training Tips

In the wild, cats have a natural ability and instinct to care for themselves.  House cats, on the other hand, depend on humans for care and feeding.  They require a considerable amount of attention.  Bookstores and local humane societies can provide cat owners with a plethora of educational materials on the responsibility of cat ownership and the care of cats. Here are some tips for how to care for a cat.

Many people falsely believe that it is impossible to train a cat.  You can train a cat with any positive training program that is based on a system of gentle training and rewards.  Rewarding good behavior and ignoring bad behavior is a proven way of training your cat.

It’s true that cats keep themselves clean.  They like to clean themselves up a little daily.  Nonetheless, your cat needs a good bath every three weeks.  Products designed just for cats are available at your local pet store, but any mild soap is sufficient.  Some, if not most, cats don’t care for baths. Unless you train your cat from the time it is a kitten to get used to bath water and reward it with a treat following every bath, you will have a scratchy situation on your hands when you try to bath the cat when it gets older.  Start when your cat is a kitten and you should be able to acclimate the cat to bathing.

Try to keep going into the bathroom for a bath calm.  If the only time you take your cat in the bathroom is for a bath, it is going to tense up when you pick it up and head for the bathroom.  Allow the cat to enter the bathroom with you at other times so that it becomes just another room in the house.  Then, when it is bath time, try to keep your cat calm and entertained.

Towel dry your cat and brush it.  Do not ever dry your cat with a hair dryer.  The sound and heavy air from the dryer will likely make your cat try to run away.  Also, the air from a hair dryer is too hot for your cat’s skin. Don’t forget, before bath time is over to carefully clean your cat’s ears and nails with a q-tip.

Most cats like to sleep with their owner or at least nearby. It’s a bad habit to allow your cat to sleep in your bed.  You’ll constantly have cat hair on the bed and your clothes.  Get the cat its own bed.

It’s best to place the litter box where the odor will not bother the family.  Keep the litter box clean or your family may not appreciate you or your cat! Keep some of these tips in mind when it comes to choosing a pet for kids as well.

Need Help Choosing a Cat?

Choosing a cat breed can be a bit daunting, especially if you don’t know very much about cats! When considering which breed of cat you like best, you must be sure to choose a breed that will best suit your lifestyle. While certain cat breeds require a great deal more grooming than others, you can also find breeds that need a lot more exercise–it’s all a matter of traits specifically belonging to certain breeds. Look below to find the top five most popular cat breeds. You will also learn about the personality type and grooming responsibilities for each breed.

The Oriental is one of the most popular cat breeds around. This breed is a very intelligent, loyal companion and tends to bond deeply with its family. It has large, pointed ears, and although its body is very sleek, it is still quite a muscular breed.

One of the most popular cat breeds for a family is the American Shorthair. The American shorthair originally was a working breed, mostly for mouse hunting, which explains the agile muscular structure and short hair. They do need a little exercise, but most are quite happy being a lap cat.

The Birman breed is thought to have originated from Burma. They usually have a white body, bright blue eyes, and brown ears, legs, tail, and face. Birmans possess a long, sturdy body structure with extensive, mat-resistant hair. They love to play and are quite gentle. They are affectionate without being too needy.

If you’re looking for a very loving, snuggly cat, then a Sphynx may be the breed for you. Although they appear to have no fur, they actually have a suede-like fur all over their body. As they don’t have much hair to protect their skin, they should strictly be kept indoors. This breed has a particular necessity for comfortable room temperature, as they can easily become too cold.

A very mild and gentle cat breed is the Ragdoll, appropriately named such as it can be quite floppy and relaxed when picked up. If you love a cat that accompanies you from room to room, this breed would likely be a wonderful match for you. They are a great breed to choose if you have children, as they are very gentle and are careful not to use teeth and claws when playing.

{Now that you have a better idea about the most popular, yet very different, cat breeds out there, hopefully you find choosing a cat to be a little less daunting than before. Be sure to remember that lifestyles are important factors to consider; so if you aren’t very active, you probably shouldn’t choose a cat that requires a lot of activity, and vice versa. Hopefully you have a better understanding of which type of cat would be best for you. Just keep in mind the requirements that each breed can demand, and be sure that whichever cat you choose, you are up to maintaining it. The best rule of thumb to go by is to choose a cat whose activity levels and lifestyle best match your own.}

It is equally important that you have the proper supplies to raise a cat. Whether your cat is exclusively an indoor pet or not, a piece of cat furniture or pet steps are a great way to ensure that your cat gets the exercise he needs to remain fit.
